Enlightenment, the only Evolution
In the course of time, the search for our true nature, for the truth of
who we are has been described in numerous ways according to the
tradition it was associated with.
In the tradition of Zen Buddhism this description of the search took the
form of a series of short poems and accompanying woodcuts that are
intended to illustrate the different stages of the practitioner's
progression towards enlightenment.
It is said that an ancient Taoist master first carved on wood these
different steps - known as the “

10 bulls of
Zen
in the Japanese Zen tradition – thus mapping
for the
traveler on this journey.
Later, a Chinese
Chan master,
Kakuan
added verses and commentary to
these pictures, making them more clearly understandable for us.
